Spree-Oder waterway becomes a digital test field

The Spree-Oder Waterway (SOW) is to become a digital testing ground for autonomous and automated inland navigation. From July, a project Autonom-SOW with partners from industry, federal government and science, said the Federal Association of Public Inland Ports (BÖB) on Friday. After initial investigations, construction is to begin in 2020. The test field at the SOW is one of four projects under the action plan “Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence in Mobility” of the Federal Ministry of Transport.

The partners and supporters of Autonom-SOW pursue a practical and goal-oriented project approach. This should first make possible and demonstrate partially automated, then automated and finally autonomous navigation in shipping. The systems, solutions, technologies and regulations to be developed will actively support the crew during navigation, take on routine tasks, anticipate and efficiently regulate challenges such as meeting traffic, bottlenecks or locks and increase the safety of transport.

The project approach is based on a high-precision satellite-based positioning of the ships and the detection of the environment by sensors. A communication based on 5G and AIS VDES with existing system partners onshore enables the efficient management of the waterway use according to principles yet to be determined. The aim is to test the technically necessary everyday equipment on board and integrate it into the digital management of the waterway. (jpn)
